Lewis Wake continued a fine 2024 campaign with a seventh win of the season in the open category at the GTR Return to Life p/b Streamline 12-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon, with Adele McAleer winning the women’s event in Northumberland.

Riding for Team Kirley Cycles, Wake clocked 25-50 to earn a first win in three events with John Routledge (GTR – Return to Life P/B Streamline) taking the runners-up spot in 26-03, while a time of 26-40 helped Adam Smith (Team Kirkley Cycles) to seal third place in a competitive field.

“I am very happy to take the win on this course,” said Wake afterwards. “Thankfully I’ve had a few attempts this year so know the course well enough when you push hard and when to save some energy.

“Thanks to GTR for putting this event on and the marshals and timekeepers for supporting.”

Having completed ten events this season Wake has registered wins at Border City Wheelers 13.5 to open his year, then at Barnesbury CC 21, Vector Racing 25, Tyneside Vagabonds CC, Blaydon CC and Tyne and Wear Fire Service CC events.

In the women’s event Team VC’s McAleer set a time of 30-30 to win from Blaydon CC’s Louise Burnie in 31-35, with Claire Harlow (Team Kirkley Cycles) third in 33-26.

"This is one of my favourite lumpy courses. I’m still striving for the sub 30 though - a girl can dream!” said McAleer. “I was happy with today's PB on a bit of a windy day.”

On the conditions faced, McAleer added: “It was pretty cool and dry and felt like a nice temperature to me although I know other riders were quite cold.

“There was the odd twitchy section, with side winds. They were not huge, but I definitely felt two big gusts that really pushed the bike and me around in a fast long downhill section.”

This event used the M12S course which is a 12-mile looped circuit that starts just north of Stamfordham and heads to Black Heddon, turning left to Ingoe then left to Matfen before heading to the finish near Stamfordham.
