The promoting club scored a one-two at the Team VC 13-mile time trial in Northumberland, with Alexandra Noonan and Adele McAleer being first and second respectively in the women’s event.
And similarly GTR-Return to Life team-mates John Routledge and Terry Wilkinson were first and second in the open category at the event near Embleton which is a memorial to a much-loved team-mate Mark Strang.
It was a dry but very blustery morning, but riders were determined to take part and went on to raise around £540 for the Maggie’s Newcastle Cancer Charity from entry fees and generous donations.
Fastest female was Alexandra Noonan (Team VC) with a time of 30-58, while her veteran team-mate Adele McAleer was second in 31-42 and third was Sarah Wilkinson (Blaydon CC) 26 seconds further back.
“It was my second time competing at this event and it did not disappoint,” said Noonan. “It’s a challenging course with some very fast ladies turning up, the sun shone and Team VC made over £500 for Maggie’s charity in memory of Mark.
“I welcomed the winds and just focused on trying to catch the girls in front. A massive thank you to Justine and Phil of Team VC for organising such a well put together and enjoyable event and of course, the Marshals who make the events possible.”
In the open event Routledge clocked 27-05 to take the win by 20 seconds from team-mate Terry Wilkinson, while third spot went to Berwick Wheelers’ rider Chris Isats, just six seconds further back in 27-31.
Afterwards, Routledge said: “It’s only the second time I’ve raced this course. I loved it last year so was excited to race it again this morning.
“I’m pleased to come away with the win and great to have my GTR team mate Terry Wilkinson in second place. Terry won this event last year and holds the course record so I’m chuffed to beat him. Many thanks to Team VC for hosting the event.”
In other categories junior rider Freya Johnson of Gosforth RC managed to take 15 mins 36 seconds off the junior female course record with a time of 33-34, and winners of the road bike categories were Noel Stoddart of Allen Valley Velo and Sarah Wann of EMC.
The event used the M13 course which begins at Embleton and loops round to Christon Bank before heading south over the East Coast Mainline and through Rennington, Littlehoughton and back north to Embleton.
