Lewis Wake (Team Kirkley Cycles) continued his winning form by taking his sixth open victory of the season at the Tyne & Wear Fire Service CC 12-mile event, while Sarah Wilkinson (Blaydon CC) was quickest woman.
Meanwhile, Alexander Storey (GS Metro) and Sarah Wann (EMC Cycling) were fastest in the open and women’s road bike events respectively.
Wake, aged 28, was the only rider to break the 26-minute mark and recorded a winning time of 25 minutes and 36 seconds.
The M12S saw competitors complete a 12-mile loop largely on minor rural roads in Northumberland starting and finishing outside Stamfordham.
Competitors for the Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service event were welcomed by the first really warm day of the season in the North East.
However, conditions were somewhat windy with riders facing a headwind during the first half of the event and then a tailwind back to Matfen.
Despite the conditions a host of personal best times were recorded on the rural course.
Scratch rider Wake also won the Blaydon CC 12 on the same course last month and posted exactly the same time this time out.
The battle for second was a close one with veteran rider John Bowman (Muckle Cycle Club) finishing in 26-10 which was just two seconds faster than Adam Smith (Team Kirkley Cycles).
“This is the second time I have raced on this course this year and somehow managed to get the exact same time so I’m really happy with my performance considering the conditions,” said Wake.
“A big thanks to Terry and Tyne and Wear Fire Rescue service for hosting today’s event which was really enjoyable.
“Next week is the National Circuit Championships which I’m really looking forward to over in Greystoke and seeing how I get on against some really strong riders.”
In the women’s event Wilkinson posted a winning time of 31-52 which was 47 seconds quicker than her nearest competitor.
Veteran rider Wilkinson finished second in the North Tyneside Riders CC 10 on her only other outing this season and went one better this time out.
Second in the women’s event was Jen McMahon (Band of Climbers CC) in 32-39, while Claire Harlow (Team Kirkley Cycles) was third (33-22).
In the road bike event GS Metro rider Storey posted a winning time of 26-43 for his fourth category victory of the season.
Second in the road bike category was Hugo Storey (Muckle Cycle Club) in 28-15, while Simon Crisp (Gosforth RC) placed third a further 34 seconds back (28-49).
Sarah Wann (EMC Cycling) has also been in fine form this season in the women’s road bike category events and picked up her fourth open win of the campaign in 33-34.
Second in the category was Joanne Hilton (Sun City Tri) in 33-47, while Celia Michie (Tyneside Vagabonds CC) finished third (34-04).
