Lewis Wake earned his sixth win of the season with success at Blaydon CC 12-mile time trial on Friday night, with Joanne Rea claiming the top prize for fastest female.

Riding for Team Kirkley Cycles, Wake posted an unbeaten 25-36, fighting off competition from GTR rider John Routledge who recorded 26-27 and third-placed John Bowman (Muckle Cycle Club), whose time of 26-29 saw him earn a spot on the time trial podium.

Wake recorded back-to-back wins on the time trial bike after victory at the Tyneside Vagabonds CC 47-mile mountain TT last Sunday, powering to success with over fifty seconds to spare.

Fastest road bike went to GS Metro’s Alex Storey with 28-34 whilst Sarah Wann (EMC Cycling) claimed top prize for the fastest female on a road bike with a time of 33-14.

On his win, Wake said: “I’m very happy to pick up the win in this event. It was a nice change doing an open on a Friday evening, so big thanks to Blaydon for organising this.

“The first half of this course is always tricky navigating the poor road surface, although thankfully there was a decent tail wind on the return on the smoother sections.”

In the women’s event, Rea topped the leaderboard with 30-27, enough to see off competition from Team VC’s Adele McAleer and Lois Jarvis (Muckle Cycle Club), who completed the podium.

Afterwards, Rea said: “I am super pleased with this win after going through a major health scare last year with a rare condition called Paget Schroetter Syndrome.

“This required major surgery and a lot of time off the bike. I got back on my bike in February this year and this is my first time trial race for around 11 months - it was also the maiden voyage of the TT bike this year!

“I went into this with absolutely no pressure or expectation. It feels great to be able to get back out there after everything that has happened and to hang out with the TT community again. “

This event, run on the M12S course, starts just northeast of Stamfordham where it ventures through Fenwick before looping back around to finish on the B6309 just east of its starting point.
