Claire Emons and Liam Maybank proved victorious at the a3crg Bank Holiday Monday 15-mile time trial near Greatham in Hampshire, with Maybank setting a new national age group record.

Riding for the promoting club a3crg, Emons clocked 34-55 to finish as fastest female by 2-21 from team-mate Lucy Mitchell.

Maybank’s time of 28-19 gave him the win in the open category by 21 seconds from Paceline RT rival Paul Burton, while Cris Coxon (Brighton Mitre CC) was another 54 seconds back in third spot.

“I had good legs today and got power down in the right places,” said Maybank, who tackles the National 10 this weekend.

“There was a bit of wind around to stop it being really fast but it's a nice course to race on and another excellent a3crg event. It was good to get the National Age Record that I missed by a few seconds in 2019.”

This win was Maybank’s eighth open time trial victory of the season, coming after wins in the Chichester City Riders 25-mile event in June which used much the same roads as this event.

Other notable 2024 wins for Maybank include the Eastern Counties 50-mile Championship in May as well as the Shaftesbury CC 50 in July.

Emons is also tackling the National 10-Mile Championship this weekend, and added: “I’ve not done many shorter distance events this year as I’ve been concentrating on longer events, and I prefer events later in the day.

“Despite the conditions being OK it felt harder than it should have but I was happy with my time. Thanks to a3crg for putting on the event.”

National record holders Rachael Elliott and Ian Greenstreet were fastest tandem in an impressive time of 29-51, while fastest road biker was VC St Raphael veteran Stephen Skinner in a time of 36-02.

The event used the P884b/15 course which begins near Greatham and uses the A3 between Liss and Bramshott.
