Piotr Zulawski earned a third successive win and broke the course record with victory in the open category at the Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club 10-mile time trial on Saturday morning, while Karen Aylen finishing as quickest female.
Riding for Cabridge CC, Zulawski maintained his fine early-season form with a time of 19-39, finishing as the only rider to break the 20-minute mark and in the process lowering William Bromiley’s existing mark of 19-54.
The runner-up spot was taken by Schils-Doltcini rider Dominic Schils in 21-52, while a time of 22-07 helped Murat Ozdenya (Team Vision Racing-Silverhook) to the final spot on the podium.
Having opened his 2024 campaign with a win at Ely and District 10-mile time trial on June 2, Zulawski then took second at the East Anglian VTTA on June 5 before winning the …a3crg Goodwood Closed Circuit League 10-mile time trial and then the East Anglian VTTA 10-mile time trial on June 19.
On his win, Zulawski said: “Over the last couple of years I have raced the E33/10 a number of times, mostly in club events, and breaking the course record has been a bit of a project of mine.
“Last year in my final attempt I managed to equal, but not quite break, Harry Tanfield's time, so I had some unfinished business!
“It was a tailwind on the way out today, and I managed to stay patient and keep the powder dry in the opening kilometres and followed up with a big effort on the hill.
“As I went over the top, a bus overtook me and slotted in front, between me and my minute man.
“This unfortunately coincided with some oncoming traffic from the opposite direction, and I ended up freewheeling and occasionally touching the brakes for about thirty seconds.
“Once the bus finally managed to move ahead, I had some time to make up and ended up having to push harder into the tailwind than I intended and I lost a bit more time on the roundabout with a couple of vehicles queuing, but the return leg was clear: I managed a decent effort but the previous accelerations made themselves known, and I was very glad to cross the finish line, fading rapidly!
“I was of course very pleased with the final outcome, shaving time off both the CTT and Strava records, and I am looking forward to the next event and, hopefully, more favourable traffic conditions.
“I would like to thank David for organising the event and all the volunteers for being so generous with their time!”
In the women’s event, Aylen set an unmatched 25-01, the Maldon and District CC rider shy of Hayley Simmond’s course record of 22-09, with Julia Freeman (Easterley Road Club) second in 26-00 and a time of 27-01 helping Lucy Griffin (Cambridge CC) to third.
Fastest road bike went to Michael Stimson (Shaftesbury CC) in 22-33, with quickest women’s road bike earned by Griffin in 27-01.
This event, run on the E33/10 course, is an out-and-back circuit that starts just south of Bottisham on Newmarket Road and heads eastwards to Stetchworth roundabout where riders turn and follow the route back to finish by the start line.
