Despite not having perfect conditions on his side Alex Dowsett (Nopinz) took almost three minutes off the course record in the Maldon & District CC 50, while Jan Harvey (Southend Wheelers) won the women’s event.

The open road bike category was also competitive with Mike Debney (Verulam Really Moving) taking the honours and third overall, while Paulina Mozal (Chelmer CC) was the only woman on a road bike.

Dowsett, aged 35, took his third open victory of the season from as many rides in a time of one hour, 41 minutes and 51 seconds.

The E21/50 saw competitors complete almost three laps of a 17-mile course.

Despite being predominately flat the circuit includes one main climb and several other undulations.

Conditions were not perfect for fast times with a reasonably strong wind for riders to contend with.

Former World Tour professional Dowsett has also won the Diss & District CC 25 and Maldon & District CC Hilly 22 and took his third open victory in style.

Spindata had predicted Dowsett to take victory in 1-44-49, but despite the windy conditions he smashed that mark and Colin Ward’s course record of 1-44-12.

David Halliday (Team Bottrill) finished second over 10 minutes behind the winner in 1-51-43, while road bike competitor Debney placed third overall in 1-53-52.

In the women’s event Harvey, aged 55, lived up to her pre-race favourite Spindata tag to take victory in a time of 2-18-29.

Harvey finished 12th in last season’s National 50-mile Championship and took her first open victory of the year on this occasion.

Chelmer CC competitor Mozal finished second overall in 2-21-14 and took her third road bike category win of the season.
Rachel Halamandres (Basildon CC) completed the women’s overall podium positions stopping the clock in 2-24-56.

In the road bike category Debney has been in formidable form this season and took his seventh open victory in a time of 1-53-52.

Four minutes back was Michael Stimson (Shaftesbury CC) who took second in 1-58-04, while Richard Mellor (Team Bottrill) finished third (2-14-34).
