David Halliday earned a fourth win of the season with victory in the open category at the Newmarket Cycling and Triathlon Club on Sunday morning, with Laura Davies taking the honours in the women’s event.

Team Bottrill rider Halliday was initially predicted to finish third by Spindata but took full advantage of top two Timothy Torrie and Piotr Zulawski withdrawing from the event he himself was organising.

Clocking 20-48, Halliday was the only rider to go sub-21-00, seeing off the challenge of runner-up High Aubrey (Cambridge CC) in 21-55, while a time of 22-06 helped Shaftesbury CC rider Ramsey Kechacha to the final spot on the podium.

With seven races under his belt so far in 2024 Halliday has now collected four wins, starting with success at the Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club 7.5-mile time trial on March 24, before winning at Easterley Road Club 25-mile time trial on April 14 and following it up with first place at the VC Baracchi 10-mile time trial on May 6.

On his win, Halliday said: “I’ve been looking forward to the Newmarket CTC points series. It’s my local course, so racing right on my doorstep is ideal!

“I also happen to be the organiser for the events, so wasn’t sure what to expect from my ride after a hectic morning getting everything together.

“Heavy rain overnight had cleared by the start and the roads dried out quickly.

“The southerly wind wasn’t too helpful, but I know these roads well and was really pleased to come away with a win and a course PB! Especially since my power metre had failed and I was riding on feel!

“A big thank you to everyone at Newmarket Cycling and Triathlon club for supporting these events this year!”

In the women’s event, Davies (Jadan Vive Le Velo) was fastest in 22-22, with Maddie Angwin (Cambridge University CC) second in 24-06, while Lucy Griffin (Cambridge CC) took third place in 28-23, also claiming the prize for fastest female road bike.

Quickest open road bike went to Duncan Gilbert (North Essex Velo) in 23-20, while Josh Arksey (Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club) was runner-up in 23-28.

First veteran on standard was Martin Reynolds for Cambridge CC, with the prize for fastest The two-up category was won by Lee Kerner (Team Milton Keynes) and Joe Kerner (trainSharp) in 25-56.

Despite heavy rain overnight, the weather had cleared up around 7:30am and the roads dried up in time for the start at 9:00am.

This event, run on the E33/10 course, is an out-and-back circuit that starts just south of Bottisham on Newmarket Road and heads eastwards to Stetchworth roundabout where riders turn and follow the route back to finish by the start line.
