Veteran Matt O'Brien (Loose Cannon's Conditioning) secured his second open victory of the season at the Lea Valley CC 25, while Maddie Angwin (Cambridge University CC) won a close battle for the women’s event.
The road bike category was also closely fought with Chris Owen (Cambridge CC) coming out on top by six seconds.
The E33/25 course provided an undulating test on a triangle loop heading out from Newmarket towards Cambridge then across to Six Miles Botton and then back to the start/finish area.
Horse racing at the nearby Newmarket Racecourse resulted heavy traffic on the roads and a delay to the start by one hour.
Once racing got underway O'Brien took victory recording a time of 53 minutes and 13 seconds – an average speed of over 28.1 miles per hour.
O’Brien, aged 46, from Woodbridge in Suffolk, also won the Stowmarket & District CC 15 and added another win to his collection on this occasion.
Sam McDonald (St Neots CC) finished second after stopping the clock in 54-02, while veteran Sam Brown (6AM Cycling) was another 20 seconds back in third (54-22).
“I wasn’t expecting to win, it was a pleasant surprise,” said O’Brien. “It was a proper sporting course and it was the first time that I’ve ridden that course.
“It was a little bit lumpy and where I thought was going to be fast were slightly uphill. It was also a bit breezy and, on the triangle course one side was fast, one side was into a headwind and the other was slightly uphill.”
In the women’s event Maddie Angwin (Cambridge University CC) took her second open victory this season recording a time of one hour, one minute and 21 seconds.
Angwin, aged 22, from Oxford, also took victory in the Ely & District CC 25 on her only other open outing this season.
Veteran Hannah O'Brien (Loose Cannon's Conditioning) finished just 29 seconds behind in second (1-01-50), while Lizzie Fox (FTP Fulfil the Potential Race Team) finished third in 1-05-51.
Angwin said afterwards: “It was a really good race and I’m super pleased to take the win!
“I really like the E33/25 as I spend a decent amount of time training on the course and I know it really well. It’s a bit lumpy which makes an interesting race. Overall I was really pleased with the race, and to have some nice weather finally!”
In the road bike category Chris Owen (Cambridge CC) took his first open category victory stopping the clock in 58-40.
Just six seconds behind was Simon Butteriss (Ely & District CC/B&T Motor Repairs) in 58-46 and Andy Delaney (Lea Valley CC) was third (1-04-19).
