Lucy Mikkelson-Barron powered to victory in the women’s category at the Border City Wheelers’ 10-mile time trial in Cumbria on Saturday, while Chris Booth claimed his fourth win of the season in the open category.
Riding the course for the first time, Mikkelson-Barron posted a 22-38 to comfortably finish top of the standings after Sue Cheetham (North Lancashire Road Club) second in 25-56 and Theresa Taylor of Springfield Financial Racing Team finishing in 26-15 for third place.
“This was another well organised, friendly event and the sun even made an appearance,” said Mikkelson-Barron after victory.
“It was a new course for me, savage head wind out but enjoyed the turn around point!
“I am just sad it’s the end of my time trial season already. I’d like to thank all the marshals for today.”
Riding for Giant-Kendal-Sidas.uk, Booth was the only rider to break the 20-minute barrier in 19-48, with Paul Branthwaite (Pendle Forest Cycling Club) sealing the runner-up spot in 20-28, while a time of 20-49 saw third place go to Mark Parsons (Team ASL-Bolton).
On his win, Booth said: “It was my first time racing the course, and it was a bit different with a gradual downhill into a strong headwind all the way to the roundabout and uphill with a fast tailwind all the way back.
“I was hopeful of a sub-20 time beforehand, but the wind really slowed things down in the first half, and I lost a bit of optimism.
“I just gave it a proper whack coming back and watched the average speed creep to 30mph plus then I knew I had it to the finish.
“It is a great course and a well organised event with good cakes and a cup of tea back at HQ as well.
“It is nice to get another win in my last CTT event of the year and I got the return leg KOM on Strava as a bit of a bonus too.”
Russ Richardson claimed first veteran in the 60+ category in 21-35, with top veteran 50-59 going to John Sturman in 21-29, and a time of 21-12 seeing David Gleave take top spot in the 40-49 category.
Best Line 1 improvement was Ted Birkbeck of Giant-Kendal-Sidas.UK in +.15.
This event, run on the L108 course, starts just west of Newbiggin on Lune and heads westbound on the A685 until reaching the traffic island at Tebay, where riders turn and follow the same route back to finish just west of the start line.
