John Archibald maintained his fine form with another success at the Pendle Forest CC Harry Clarkson Memorial 10-mile time trial on Saturday evening, with Beth Macrae taking the honours in the women’s event.

Riding for HUUB WattShop, Archibald posted an unmatched 17-19 to lower Simon Wilson’s course record of 17-29 by 10 seconds and take victory ahead of Thomas Lee (Sheffrec Cycling Club) in 18-17, while a time of 18-52 helped Lewis Wake (Team Kirkley Cycles) to the final spot on the podium.

On his win, Archibald said: “I hadn't ridden the Levens course before, but knew it was one of the quicker ones, so I saw it as a good chance to set a PB.

“It felt a bit different doing a weekend time trial and finishing at 8pm, but it was a very popular event.

“It's a wide carriageway (and a lot of it dual), so it was quick like I expected.

“I matched my Spindata time ahead of the National 25-mile time trial, so it's nice to see that form across the board seems to be holding okay and my body is no longer seized from the lower back downwards after the 100.”

In the women’s event, Macrae (Jadan Vive Le Velo) posted an impressive 21-57, with a time of 22-26 saw Muckle Cycle Club’s Lois Jarvis to second spot and Evelyn Field (Solas Race Team) claimed third place in 23-34.

“I really enjoyed this course as always however I was struggling to get into a good rhythm but I kept pushing as hard as I could and it paid off,” said Macrae after her win.

“I was 5 seconds off my personal best but I am still pleased as haven’t been training much on my time trial bike!

“I will go again on the same course in August!”

Quickest road bike went to Martin Horrobin (Horwich Cycling Club) in 23-11.

This annual memorial event is named in honour of Harry Clarkson, who was a member of the Pendle Forest Cycling Club after joining in 1939, with the winner awarded the Harry Clarkson Memorial Cup.

This 10-mile event, run on the L1015 course, starts east of Levens, just southwest of the A6 and proceeds along the A590 in a south-westerly direction, encircling the roundabout on Lindale bypass and retrace along the A590 in a north-easterly direction to finish just short of Levens Bridge.
