Tom Scorer claimed a fourth win of the season at the Okehampton CC 10-mile time trial on Saturday evening in Devon, with Maria Weymouth finishing as fastest female.

Royal Navy Cycling rider Scorer continued his fine recent form with a winning time of 20-43, ahead of the 21-04 set by Lloyd Copp, riding for the promoting club, while third place went to Cranbrook Cycle Club’s Lubos Obornik who finished in 22-16.

Having completed seven races so far this campaign, Scorer began 2024 with impressive wins at Kernow Racing Team 10-mile time trial on April 24 and then again on April 28, before finishing as runner-up at St Piran / Northover Vets Team 25-mile time trial, with an eighth at …a3crg 50-mile time trial on June 2 before another second place finish at giant Helston 25-mile time trial on June 23.

“This was a tough race with a longer outbound leg into a strong headwind which made bike handling a challenge at times,” said Scorer. “All riders were lucky to miss the heavy rain which fell before and after the race.

“I’m really pleased to get the win as it has been a challenge to get the training in with work and travel commitments. As always, thank you to all the volunteers (organisers, time-keepers, marshals and cake makers!)”

In the women’s event, Weymouth (Mid Devon Cycling Club) finished in 27-16 to take victory.

Okehampton CC's Jonathan Hobbs picked up victory in the road bike category in 23-28 while Scorer also took the veterans on standard category with a plus of 5-33.

Fastest female, Maria Weymouth said: “I'm happy with last night's race, even though it was my slowest time for a 10 this year.

“It's a good course depending on the wind direction. Unfortunately this was one thing the excellent race organisers (Okehampton CC) couldn't arrange. A stiff westerly along with rain before and afterwards lead to a depleted field of riders and slow times.

“I choose a lower profile front wheel and managed to stay aero throughout the race, while snaking down the dual carriageway.”

A depleted field struggled against a fierce headwind over the outbound leg alongside showers throughout the course.

This event, run on the S40/10 course, is an out-and-back circuit that starts northwest of Bridestowe and heads westbound on the A30 towards Stowford Cross before turning off at Broadwoodwdger and turning at the dual carriageway to follow the route eastbound back along the A30 to finish 1.5 miles west of the start line.
