Kieran Wynne-Cattanach (Team Lifting Gear Products) recorded a weekend double by winning the Withington Wheelers hill climb in terrible conditions, while Bronwen Jenkinson (Saint Piran) was the quickest woman.

Wynne-Cattanach, also won the Halifax Imperials Wheelers event the previous day, his time of 2-29 for Peaslow meant Andy Nichols (Team Lifting Gear Products) had to settle for second in 2-33 and Jude Taylor (Team PB Performance) was third (2-39).

The 980-yard climb is a consistent gradient of between 10 and 12 per cent and starts outside Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire before climbing on the road towards Sparrowpit.

Conditions were described as awful for the event with riders battling persistent rain and a headwind, the worst experienced for the Withington hill climb event for many years.

The long-standing course record of 2-08 set by Malcolm Elliott in 1981 remains for another year, as does Mary Wilkinson’s women’s record of 2-45.

“Taking first at the Withington Wheelers event on Peaslows was a huge boost,” said Wynne-Cattanach.

“The weather was as bad as it gets, blowing a gale right down the hill.

“It was quite slippery in the woods at the bottom, and I went off with a bit too much enthusiasm, but managed to just about hold on to the line!”

Quickest youth rider Jacob Bradbury (Manchester Wheelers) finished seventh overall in 3-05 and helped his team to the quickest team award.

Fastest veteran was Andrew Laidler (Sitwell Cycling Club) in 3-07 and Benjamin Rawsthorne (Waldy Wheelers) was best under-23 rider (3-18).

After finishing second in the Protech Velo hill climb last weekend Jenkinson went one better on this occasion clocking 4-08.

The only other female competitor was Lia Stynes (Macclesfield Wheelers) in 4-52.

“The organisers and marshals at Withington Wheelers are so friendly and supportive of riders so it was an enjoyable ride despite the pretty heavy rain,” said Jenkinson.

“The race itself went pretty well, I rode fairly conservatively at the start to try and save some power for the open draggy section at the top.

“I’m still getting used to pushing myself in hill climbs though, so looking forward to trying to improve over the next month.”
