David James Williams continued his fine form this season with another victory in the open category at the Manchester & District Ladies Cycling Association 10-mile time trial on Saturday, while Emily Martin finished as fastest female.

Riding for Velotik Racing Team, Williams clocked 20-42 to lead the field, ahead of Weaver Valley CC’s Sam Taylor who was runner-up in 20-54, while a time of 21-18 helped Richard Shaw (Seamons CC) to the final spot on the podium.

Williams now has a fifth win from six events so far this campaign, including overall wins at the Manchester & District Time Trial Association 25-mile time trial on April 13 and success at the Mid Shropshire Wheelers 2-Up team time trial on April 14, as well finishing fastest road bike at the Crewe Clarion Wheelers 15 2-Up team time trial on March 31.

“I was happy with the win but disappointed with my performance as I wasn't at my best,” said Williams. “I'd just got back from a wedding in Cyprus with the family for a week so I was feeling a little flat after a week of indulgence.

“It was a shame too as I felt conditions were good and knew it would be fast enough to go sub 21 and luckily enough my lungs just about held out for the win. Big thanks to Manchester Ladies invitation for the event and everyone involved with the organisation.”

In the women’s event, Martin (Team Bottrill) finished clear of the field in 22-22 to set a provisional new men’s course record, while Congleton CC rider Alice Taylor clocked 23-31 for second and a time of 24-35 helped Deb Hutson-Lumb (Wrekinsport CC) to third place.

This 10-mile event, run on the J4/20 course, starts just east of Byley on Moss Lane and continues eastbound to Cranage before turning northbound to Allostock then the B5081 to Toft where riders head south to pass Lower Peover and Swan Green, finishing just before Hulme Hall Lane.
