Tombs and Blowers take victory at National Youth Championships

Toby Tombs claimed victory in a tightly contested National Youth Championships hosted by Newbury Velo on Sunday afternoon, with Carys Blowers setting a new course record in taking the prize for top girl.

With Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club rider Tombs sealing victory in 20-52 over the ten mile distance, the rest of the top 10 were separated by just 80 seconds with some impressive performances delivered on the day delivered by the finest young talent in the country.

The runner-up spot went to Sam Martin (Beeston Cycling Club) in 21-02 ahead of the 21-35 set by Southend Wheelers rider Charles Langford for the final spot on the podium.

In the girls category Blowers secured the title for Liv CC-Halo Films after posting a time of 22-27 – quicker than the existing record of 22-46 set by Rachael Elliott - while Matlock Cycling Club’s Maia Howell was second in 23-11 and Millie Salmon (Clifton Cycling Club York) posted 24-18 to take third place.

Fastest team of three went to Secret Training Cycling Club trio Freddie Winkley, Billy Ladle and Katie Lawson in a cumulative time of 1:08-39, ahead of Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club who took second.

In the male groupings, best under-12 was Osian Phillips (Maindy Flyers) in 25-14, with Asher Gray (Welwyn Wheelers) the top under-13 in 22-01 and Secret Training Cycling Club’s Winkley finishing quickest Under-14 in 21-39, while Tombs was the best Under 15 and top Under-16 [rize went to Langford.

Alice Tulett (Thanet Road Club) was fastest Under-12 female in 30-23, with Eloise Ward (Lee Valley Youth Club) fastest under-14 in 24-32 and Maia Howell (Matlock Cycling Club) taking Under-15 honours in 23-11 and Blowers topping the Under-16 category.

This event, run on the H10/3A course, is an out-and-back circuit that starts at the junction of Wickfield Road, just east of Shefford Woodlands, and heads south-east on the B4000until reaching the roundabout where riders turn and follow the route back to finish just north of Wickham.
