Jake Sargent lived up to his status as pre-race Spindata favourite and set a course record on his way to victory in the open category at the Hounslow & District Wheelers 55th Ron Brown Memorial 100-mile time trial on Sunday morning, with Chris Murray finishing as quickest female at the event in Hampshire.

Riding for Team Bottrill, Sargent beat the existing mark of 3:27-34 set by Chris Davies, lowering it to 3:25-46 to seal victory ahead of runner-up Christopher McNamara (Sigma Sports Race Team) who managed 3:28-35, while the final spot on the podium went to BPC BIOFLOW RT’s Hadyn James in 3:29-48.

This success means Sargent’s unbeaten run stretches to seven events, with nine wins from 10 rides so far this season and his only defeat coming at Gillingham & District Wheelers 18.4-mile time trial on March 16.

On his win, Sargent said: “I feel like I had a good race today.

“Getting good a ride on this course today has been on the plan for most of the year, with other fast 100s clashing with other events this was my only opportunity to secure a fast time for the BBAR!

“It wasn't without its hiccups though, I came down with a cold earlier in the week and was unsure about racing today, combined with a puncture at mile 55 it could have all gone south very quickly!

“Fortunately, the puncture sealed and I was able to nurse the bike around the rest of the course, albeit at 40 psi!

Had some great competition out there today, Chris and Hadyen both had me pushing all the way to the line, I knew that any let-up could easily tip the race in their favour!”

Looking forward to some more local races before tackling the National TTT later in the year!

Fastest open road bike went to Simon Butteriss (Ely and District CC) in 4:02-02, while Sien Van Der Plank (New Forest CC) was quickest female road bike in 4:38-33.

In the women’s event, Murray, riding for Army Cycling, completed the circuit in 4:09-41, more than 12 minutes ahead of runner-up Corinne Clark (360VRT) who took second place in 4:21-56, while third place was sealed in 4:32-43 by Naomi Shinkins (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers).

This event, run on the H100/88 course, starts south of Upper Froyle and heads northwest past Bentley until reaching the A31 roundabout just before Farnham, where riders turn and follow the route back past the start and onwards, beyond Holybourne and Alton to turn at the A32 roundabout at Chawton before returning to the A31along the same route.

Riders complete the circuit nine times before finishing just east of the start line to complete 100 miles.
