Hadyn James (BPC BIOFLOW Race Team) and Naomi De Pennington (Drag2Zero) finished minutes clear of their respective opponents at the Reading CC 50.

James, aged 40, posted a personal best time of one hour, 40 minutes and 25 seconds which was over five minutes clear of his nearest opponent.

The 50-mile event was run in memory of David Gaida and saw riders compete over three laps of an on the out and back H50/1C course, which runs on the A4 between Theale and Colthrop and starting in Woolhampton.

James won the Newbury RC 25 last weekend and was competing in his first 50-mile time trial since placing 16th in the National Championship in 2019.

Lee Williams (FTP (Fulfil The Potential) Race Team) has also been in good form, winning the Maidenhead & District CC 15 in March.

However, Williams had to settle for runner-up spot on this occasion in 1-45-34 which was 40 seconds faster than Daniel Legg (North Hampshire RC) in third.

Spindata had predicted a victory for James in 1-42-39 but in good conditions he beat that time by over a minute.

“It was a great event run by my old hometown/club Reading, who also organised fantastic weather,” said James.

“The new road surface to the Theale end, makes the course a much more enjoyable ride.

“It was my first 50 since 2019 after having a few years off the bike due to injury, so I was very happy with a personal best by almost five minutes.”

In the women’s event De Pennington, aged 47, was in equally impressive form in the women’s event posting a winning time of 1-51-43.

De Pennington clinched bronze in the National 100-mile Championship last season and won the Banbury Star 21.8-mile event on her other open outing this season.

Selina Clifford (London Dynamo) placed second in 1-59-02 and Laura Nagi (Reading CC) rounded off the podium positions (2-01-48).

Quickest in the road bike competition was Marcel Mavronicholas (North Hampshire RC) in 2-10-09, ahead of Nigel Parker (North Hampshire RC) in second (2-16-08).

The only woman road bike competitor was Samantha Manning (Thames Velo) who covered the course in 2-28-38, while tricycle rider Jymmy Trevor (City RC (Hull) finished in 2-11-57.
