Jake Sargent

Jake Sargent lived up to his billing as pre-race Spindata favourite with victory in the open category at the Farnborough & Camberley Cycling Club 10-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon, with Delyth Williams winning the women’s category.

Riding for Team Bottrill, Sargent was the only rider to break the 20-minute barrier, finishing in 19-08 – a minute behind Charlie Tanfield’s course record of 18-07.

Second place went to Festival Road Club’s Colin McDermott in 20-16, while the final spot on the podium was secured by Matthew Buckley of Velo Club St Raphael in 20-27.

This continues a fine 2024 season for Sargent with five wins from six events so far, including success at the Severn CC 12.5-mile time trial on February 18, follow by University of Bristol CC 10-mile time trial victory on march 9, then runner-up Gillingham & District Wheelers 18.4-mile time trial on March 16, with victories at Bristol South Cycling Club 12.2-mile time trial and Hereford & District Wheelers CC 25-mile time trial.

On his success, he said: “It was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I'm very pleased with my result and the time I did, getting another consecutive win and 31mph ride is surely a good sign, but I wasn't on my best form yesterday.

The course was deceptively challenging. At first it appears to be a fast, albeit rolling, course, but the ramps really slow you down.

“Paired with the rough road surface, which I've been informed is considerably better than years gone by, make for a challenging ride.

“I'd like to go back and have another go later in the year but for now the focus is on the Gloucester City CC 25 next weekend which will be a good recce for the National Team Time Trial later in the year.”

In the road bike category Tom Walton (Islington Cycling Club) was fastest and 22nd overall in 25-06, with LFGSS CC rider Jorj James taking second place on a road bike in 28-34.

Dulwich Paragon CC’s Delyth Williams set an unmatched 25-26 for the women’s title, while Gina Brown (Redhill CC) clocked 30-48 for second place and third spot was claimed in 32-23 by Arefa Amini (Evolve – The Cycling Network for Muslim Women).

This event, run on the H10/8 course, starts west of Bentley and joins the A31 to head westbound through Froyle and turning at the Holybourne roundabout, circling the Holybourne roundabout and following the route back on the A31, back past Froyle and finishing just south of the start line.
