Lindsay Clarke secured victory in the women’s category in what proved to be a family affair at Northampton and District Cycling Association 10-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon, with Jack Patmore triumphing in the open category.
Fenland Clarion CC rider Clarke says she took inspiration from having her son, Joe, organising his first event and her grandchildren assisting the helpers throughout.
A time of 25-03 saw Clarke take victory from Evgeniya Righini-Brand (Spalding CC) in 25-53, while a time of 26-08 ensured Carolyn Pfalzgraf (VeloElite Road Club) take the final spot on the podium.
Riding for Geroge Fox Cycling Solutions, Patmore picked up a first win from 10 rides since his victory at the Fenland Clarion 25-mile time trial on course N1/25C on May 19 – a run that includes three runners-up finishes and a further three third places.
On this occasion he led the field in 20-53, ahead of Peterborough Cycling Club’s Jamie Murray who posted 21-12 while third place went to Dominic Righini-Brand of Spalding Cycling Club in 21-49.
On his win, Patmore said: “With most of the big dogs over at the National 10-mile time trial, I took the strategic decision to enter the final round of the brilliant NDCA series.
“It is probably the best I've ridden this year and long overdue.
“I knew there would still be stiff competition with Jamie Murray's name on the start sheet as he's been getting quicker and quicker as the year goes on.
“My personal thanks go to George Fox for all his help this year, he is a truly top guy.
“He rescued me off the sofa at 105kg and got me back racing and without him I probably would have been in the queue for McDonald's today instead of racing.”
This event, held on course N1/10, is an out-and-back circuit that starts just east of Sawtry and heads north on the B1043 through Stilton until turning to follow the route back to Sawtry and finish just north of the start line.
“I was feeling quite motivated to win as my son was organising this event - his first time organising, and my grandchildren were helping, assisting the timekeeper and manning the tea stall,” said Clarke after her victory.
“I tried really hard going out, knowing that it would be a bit easier coming back, as it’s more downhill and the wind would be slightly behind me.
“It was mostly a side wind really, a bit gusty when there was a gap in the hedges, so I was glad I didn’t put my tri-spoke front wheel in!
“After the second to last roundabout it was all downhill to the finish, so I powered to the line at 29 mph trying to look good for my grandson Max! Just failed to beat 25 minutes but I was happy.
“It was a very well organised event and everyone lingered in the HQ afterwards, chatting, looking at the results and eating cake.”
