Marcel Schubert

Marcel Schubert earned his second win of the season with victory at the Stockton Wheelers CC sporting 23-mile time trial on Sunday, with Kate Sanderson finishing as fastest female.

Riding for Zurburan Racing, Schubert clocked 50-12 ahead of Darlington Cycle Club’s Keith Murray in 52-38 for the runners-up spot, while a time of 53-12 saw Josef Murray (Protech Velo) finish third overall and first in the road bike category.

Having now competed in five events in the 2024 season, Schubert has registered his second win after success in the Cleveland Wheelers cycling Club hilly 25-mile time trial on April 21, having also managed eighth at the Darlington CC hill climb on March 10, and seventh at the AIMS Cycling hill climb on April 27.

“Today went really well,” said Schubert. “This is one of my most local courses and today was my sixth attempt since 2018.

“Conditions were very good, hardly any wind. I am very happy with the result as I managed to beat my 2022 course PB of 51:03 and also managed to stay ahead of the Spindata prediction despite having being slowed down a few times by traffickers behind slower riders.

“I would like to thank the organising team at Stockton Wheelers and CTT Teesside for running the event.”

In the women’s event, Cleveland Wheelers CC rider Kate Sanderson was top of the rankings in 1:06-40, seeing off competition from second-placed Sophia Brooks in 1:15-02, with the Manilla Cycling rider also first in the female road bike category.

Jayne Dickens (Durham Triathlon Club) sealed the final spot on the podium in 1:15-32.

This 23-mile event, run on the T235 course, starts just east of Redmarshall and proceeds through Bishopton, up the hill to Great Stanton T Junction with a left turn southbound to Sadberge, then left onto the C51 towards Norton back to Redmarshall village then repeating the first lap via Stainton and Sadberge Village to continue left, on towards Bishopton and finish at the entrance to Stoney Flat Farm.
