Marcel Schubert

Marcel Schubert earned a second successive win with victory at the Ferryhill Wheelers CC Andy Oliver Memorial 20-mile time trial on Saturday morning, while Kate Sanderson was fastest female.

Having secured an impressive victory last time out at the Stockton Wheelers 23-mile time trial, Schubert was again at the head of the field with the Zurburan Racing rider finishing in 43-02 to take the honours.

He has now competed in six open events in 2024, and Schubert has three wins to his name after success in the Cleveland Wheelers CC hilly 25-mile time trial on April 21.

On his win, Schubert said: “I was very happy to win the event. While I know all the roads, this was my first attempt at this course and I really like it. Originally it was a road race.

“The event was held in memory of local racing legend Andy Oliver and his parents were at the awards presentation in support of the Cardiac Arrest in the Young charity. I would like to thank Ferryhill Wheelers for organising the event.

“This was also my fourth Sporting Course TT in Teesside District so I have now qualified for the Spoco Series, which was one of my goals for the season.”

Protech Velo’s Shaun Tyson narrowly claimed the runners-up spot in 44-02, just two second ahead of third-placed Steve Smales (Harrogate Nova CC) who set 44-04 in a dramatic tussle for the podium.

In the women’s event Sanderson maintained her recent, impressive strong form – having also won at the Stockton Wheelers event – to set an unbeaten 55-35, comfortably earning victory while a time of 56-22 helped junior Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Wheelers) to second place and the final spot on the podium going to Darlington CC’s Joe Scott in 58-16.

This event was run on the T203 in good conditions out on the course.
