Jennifer Hudson (FTP (Fulfil the Potential) Race Team) used her local knowledge of the Burrington Combe climb to great effect as she took victory in the Bristol South Cycling Club hill climb, while Gabe Dellar (Stolen Goat Race Team) was quickest in the open category.

Scratch rider Hudson, aged 32, continued her unbeaten hill climb campaign by taking a fifth open win of the campaign.

Starting outside Burrington the Burrington Combe climb saw competitors compete over two miles at an average gradient of 6%.

Gusts of wind across the Somerset countryside impacted times, with some riders also experiencing wet conditions.

Hudson has had an impressive hill climb season and she clocked a winning time of eight minutes and 56 seconds.

Just three seconds back was Natalie Grinczer (Roland) in 8-59 and Esther Ive (Bristol South Cycling Club) finished third (11-24).

“I was really happy to take the win at Burrington, it's one of my local climbs so I definitely had an advantage there although it didn't make me suffer any less,” said Hudson.

“Luckily the rain had stopped by the time I started racing but the wind gusts kept it interesting. I always appreciate the volunteers and everyone else who comes out to support us in weather like that!”

Gabe Dellar.

Meanwhile, in the open category 23-year-old Dellar, from Southampton, posted a winning time of 7-32 – some 10 seconds ahead of his nearest opponent.

Dellar was Spindata favourite for victory having won the Chippenham & District Wheelers hill climb event last month.

Joshua Hall (Elevate RT) had to settle for second in 7-32, while quickest junior George Watch (Mid Devon Cycling Club) also finished third overall in 7-46.

The quickest veteran was Kevin Thomas (Bradford-on-Avon Cycling Club) who completed the course in 8-35.

“It was wet and wild,” said Dellar.  “The rain was biblical, with a river running down the road and a massive headwind, so I opted to keep the race bike dry and just take the pressure off and use the spare bike.

“It seemed to work as the legs delivered and I'm really happy with my ride, although all my focus is on the National Championships next weekend!”
