Jake Sargent (Team Bottrill) and Lizzie Rayner (Performance Cycles CC) took advantage of good conditions to set new course records at the Chippenham & District Wheelers 25.

Sargent, aged 24, knocked 22 seconds off his own record from 2021 with a new benchmark winning time of 51 minutes and 25.

Meanwhile, Rayner won the women’s event in 59 minutes and 57 seconds – taking two minutes and 40 seconds off the previous record.

The U86/25 saw competitors start with an out and back leg along the B4042 out to Burton Hill before a 20-mile loop.

After road works impacted last year’s event competitors were treated to dry and warm conditions on a relatively still day.

Sargent has been in stellar form this season and this was his 10th open win from 11 outings.

Fellow Team Bottrill rider Rob Francis (Team Bottrill) completed a one-two for the team by finishing second in 53-02, while Oscar Hutchings (Team Tor 2000 | KALAS) placed third (53-12).

Quickest veteran on scratch and age adjusted time was fourth placed Hadyn James (BPC FLOWBIO Race Team) in 53-48.

Meanwhile, quickest junior competitor was Huw Cressey-Rodgers (VMCC powered by Y Beic) who finished seventh overall in 59-55.

The winning team was Bath Cycling Club with Steven Cottington (1-00-02), Henry Bond (1-00-57) and Alexander Luisi (1-01-37) all contributing.

“It was a great race for me and the team today, we had two riders entered and we managed to take the two top spots,” said Sargent.

“Rob is coming back to racing after shoulder surgery which makes his second place all the more impressive!

“It was deceptively slow conditions out there today, although the weather was lovely and the winds were light I think the general consensus was it was a slower day.

“My ride was good, the last time me and Rob raced against each other he beat me comfortably and I was keen to keep him at bay, so I rode hard throughout and focused on the pacing and power plan put together by my coach Matt Bottrill.

“For me it’s the Bath CC Hard Riders 25 next weekend before we take on the National Team Time Trial Championship.”

In the women’s event Rayner, aged 26, marked her first open time trial with victory by over eight minutes.

Second in the women’s event was Liffey Daniels (FTP Fulfil the Potential Race Team) in 1-08-10, while veteran Marianne Carpenter (Bath Cycling Club) finished third overall in 1-12-28.

“It was my first time trial so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but as a triathlete it was certainly nice to not have a swim and a run to think about,” added Rayner.

“It was a great chance to test my time trial position and raw power in a big training block!

“It was a great course and in amazing weather so I really enjoyed it!”

Veteran Karl Norris (360VRT) was the quickest road bike competitor with his time of 59-13 good enough for sixth place overall.

Second in the open road bike category was Henry Bond (Bath Cycling Club) in 1-00-57, while Andrew Metherell (Velo Club Bristol) finished third (1-00-33).

Meanwhile, veteran Maria Powell (FTP Fulfil the Potential Race Team) was quickest in the women’s road bike competition in 1-15-08 ahead of the Bristol South Cycling Club pairing of Joanna Legge-Knight in second (1-22-00) and Mary-Jane Hutchinson in third (1-24-51).
