Nick English (AeroCoach) took a narrow victory by 12 seconds in the Bristol South Cycling Club event over 10 miles, while Bristol South CC team-mates Esther Ive and Joanna Legge-Knight shared victory in the women’s event.

Along with matching the overall women’s quickest time Ive was riding a road bike and won that category, with Deacon Cutterham (Velo Club Bristol) the quickest in the open event.

The sun came out but the wind was challenging on the day as riders competed on Saturday afternoon along the A38 between Swanley Lane and Slimbridge in Gloucestershire.

The open event was closely contest with the fastest six riders separated by just 33 seconds.

Veteran rider English, from Bath, was the quickest taking his first open victory of the season in 21 minutes and 17 seconds.

The 45-year-old finished third in The University of Bristol CC event, also on the U7B last month, stopping the clock in 21-52 on that occasion – 35 seconds slower.

Racing in his first open event Joseph Grey (Cheltenham & County CC) finished second just 12 seconds back (21-29).

In a close battle for the podium positions Dylan Griffiths finished third in 21-35, just five seconds quicker than his University of Bath CC team-mate and Aaron Pascovitch (Bristol South Cycling Club) who both stopped the clock in 21-40.

The women’s event was equally as close with road bike competitor Ive and time trial bike rider Legge-Knight both finishing in exactly 28-41 to share the overall honours.

Pushing them both close was Susan Oldham (Cowley Road Condors CC) who finished third a further 11 seconds back (28-52).

In the road bike competition veteran Deacon Cutterham (Velo Club Bristol) took his first open victory in 23-50, beating Andrew Legge-Knight (Bristol South CC) into second (28-43).

Meanwhile, the tandem pairing of Bradley Sewell and Jane Barker (Wincanton Wheelers) completed the course in 30-15, while and hand cyclist Geoff Pickin (PDQ Cycle Coaching) stopped the clock in 34-59.
