Harry MacFarlane picked up a fourth win of the season with success at the Brighton Mitre Cycling Club Steyning Bostal Hill Climb on Saturday morning, with Christina Wiejak claiming the crown for fastest female in West Sussex.

Riding for TAAP Kalas, MacFarlane posted 3:45.27, just seven seconds short of the 2015 record set by Lukas Nerurkar, with promoting club rider George Bentley finishing runner-up in 4:20-03 and a time of 4:24-33 helping Richard Cartland (HuntBikeWheels.com) to the final spot on the podium.

From his six rides this season, MacFarlane has four wins and two runners-up finishes, enuring he heads into the National Championships next weekend in fine form.

In the women’s event Wiejak was ahead of the field in 5:00-03, just five seconds outside of the course record, while Penge Club Club’s Wendy Mathie taking second place in 5:55-27 and Tina Lohr (Horsham Cycling) third in 6:01-80.

Cesare Masset, from the host club, and Rhiana Mahoney picked up the Junior wins and host club Brighton Mitre, enjoying a fine day individually, also took the team win with three riders in the top 10 including George Bentley in second overall alongside Masset in fourth and tenth-placed Robb Cunningham.

This time trial formed the first part of a two-part event run by Brighton Mitre Cycling Club, with this course featuring a relatively steep climb for just under a mile, with heavy rain beforehand leaving the hill wet and slippy with fallen leaves although conditions were otherwise fair with a mild wind.

This event, held on course GH/92, is a hill climb starting on Bostal Road, just west of Castle Lane Park, riders proceed westbound and ascend the hill for 0.9 miles to finish atop Steyning Round Hill.
