Chris McNamara (pictured) earned his fifth win of the season at the Bec CC 25-mile time trial in West Sussex on Saturday, while Kerry McGawley finished as the fastest female rider.
Riding for Sigma Sports Race Team, McNamara set an unbeaten 50-34 to take the title ahead of fellow veteran rider Paul Willcox (North Road CC), who was second with 50-41, while Andy Critchlow (Team Ohten Aveas) clinched third with a time of 50-53.
A fine ride from McNamara saw the veteran live up to his billing as Spindata pre-race favourite and claim his first open category title since the East Sussex CA 50-mile event in June.
“I hadn’t touched my time trial bike since the National 50, so it had been a fair few weeks but I really enjoyed the day - a beautiful sunny morning as well as a light tailwind down the A24, which is quite unusual,” said McNamara.
“I felt I paced it well and it was very close amongst the top four, so I was really happy to come out on top. Bec is such a friendly club, so it's a nice one to win and get my name on the cup.”
In the women’s category, McGawley posted 1:04-05 to take home the title ahead of Jacqui Lane (Eastbourne Rovers CC), who set 1:06-51 for second place, while Glenda Goscomb of 7Oaks Tri Club finished 1:15-30 to secure the final podium position.
Olly Thomas of Sussex Revolution Velo Club was the fastest road bike finisher with 57-32, a time good enough for seventh overall, while the fastest veteran in the sixty plus category was Adrian Blacker (VTTA (Surrey/ Sussex), who recorded a time of 57-59.
This 25-mile event, run on the G25/93, starts on Horsham Road by Wappington Lodge where it heads north towards Partridge Green. Upon reaching West Grinstead, it turns south before embarking on an ‘out-and-back’ course on the A283 to finish in Steyning.
