Naomi Shinkins (Bournemouth Jubilee Whs) smashed the women’s open course record at the Southern Counties CU event over 100 miles, while Pat Wright (Paceline RT) added another victory to his tally in the open category.

Meanwhile, youth rider Benjamin Cousins (Verulam Really Moving) was quickest road bike and an impressive second overall.

Shinkins took the women’s victory by over 11 minutes and knocked almost seven minutes off the previous course record to set a new benchmark time of 4-32-29.

The G100/61A sees riders start on the A272 and start with an out-and-back leg to Ansty.

Returning to the start on the 14-mile mark competitors then completed loops of a course which went down to Washington on the A24, across to Steyning and then back to West Grinstead.

Riders were greeted by mostly sunny conditions with light winds as they tackled the undulating in sections course.

Veteran rider Shinkins finished third in the Hounslow & District Whs 100 two weeks ago but was not to be denied on this occasion.

She also broke the previous open women’s course record of 4-39-24 by Anouska Greenaway.

Completing the women’s podium positions was Lauren Falconer (Poole Wheelers Cycling Club) in second (4-43-38) and Gemma Shadbolt (Brighton Mitre CC) in third (5-03-10)

Wright, aged 39, is synonymous with the Southern Counties CU 100 having first won the event in 2018 and has also taking victory for the last two consecutive years.

The Paceline RT rider tasted victory again this time out stopping the clock in a winning time of three hours, 46 minutes and seven seconds.

Wright, from Little Bookham, also won the Sussex CA 50 last month and took his fourth open victory this time out.

Four minutes behind in second place was 15-year-old road bike competitor Cousins who second overall in 4-20-59.

Completing the open podium positions was Ian Cheesman (Worthing Excelsior CC) in a time of 4-21-51.

Youth rider Cousins was a clear winner of the road bike category ahead of Bec CC team-mates Dominic Hill in second (4-22-13) and Tony Truepenny-Phillipson in third (4-28-04).
