Liam Maybank

Liam Maybank earned his first win of the season with victory in the open category at the East Sussex 25-mile time trial on Sunday morning, with Domie Pollard the quickest female.

Riding for Twickenham CC, Maybank finished clear of the field in 50-12, outside of Andy Critchlow’s course record of 49-30.

Having earned second place at the East Sussex 10 on Saturday, Simon McNamara made it a pair of runners-up finishes in 52-37, ahead of Nik Allen (Team TMC) who earned third in 54-16.

“It was a much nicer day than it has been recently but still quite cold,” said Maybank. “It was nice to put out a good ride again after a few years with health issues getting in the way. It was a bit too cold to feel good, but I had power all the way round.”

In the women’s event, Pollard (East Grinstead CC) 1:18-45 took top honours.

In the road bike category, Matt Phipps-Taylor was fastest in 56-47, ahead of Ewan Tuohy in 58-21 while the final spot on the podium went to Tim Coogan in 1:04-44.

Maybank followed up his overall win with finishing as fastest veteran on age-adjusted time in 48-04.

Brighton Mitre took team honours thanks to Paul Thatcher (56-28), John Marinko (1:04-31) and Donald Parker (1:07-43) for a total time of 3:09-42.

Riders enjoyed dry, sunny but quite cold conditions at around 7 – 12 degrees with a light southeast breeze.

This event, held on course G25/93, is a partially looped circuit that begins just north of Steyning and sees riders head northbound on Horsham Road through Ashurst to bear west at West Grinstead and head southbound to complete a loop, turning at Washington to head through Steyning before turning at the A283 and returning back through Steyning to finish south of the start line.
