Ben Wiggins made it two wins from two rides this season as he stepped up preparations for the World Championships with victory and a course record at the Yorkshire Road Club 25-mile time trial, while Samantha Bissell finished as fastest female on Saturday afternoon.
Riding for Team Bottrill, Wiggins finished in 48-16, more than five minutes ahead of runner-up John Brearley (ADDFORM Vive Le Velo) in 54-40, while a time of 55-20 helped Shaun Lawson (Clifton Cycling Club York) narrowly claim third place from Mark Walker (Velo Sport Racing) who was four seconds back in 55-24.
On his win, Wiggins said: “I am happy to build on my ride again from last week going 15 seconds quicker and happy to do a couple of solid rides in preparation for the World Championships in a few weeks.”
Quickest veteran was Ferryhill Wheelers rider David Nichol in 51-36, while David Meakin (Seacroft Wheelers) was top of the road bike category in 1:01-05.
In the women’s category Bissell (City Road Club Hull) clocked 1:02-19, with Jill Speight (Barracuda Triathlon Club) runner-up in 1:09-33, while Tri Racing’s Lorna Dodd was third in 1:12-23.
“It was a tough ride for me once I turned at the North roundabout as there seemed to be a headwind for a few miles,” said Bissell after her success.
“I was hoping for a little faster but this course is challenging with wind.
“I have a 10 miler on September 14 on this course which I am feeling confident for.”
This event, run on the V235 course, start just south of Boroughbridge and heads south towards Walshford, with riders then following the A168 back past the start to Boroughbridge, before again heading back south to Walshford and north again on the A168 to finish just north of the start line.
