Ben Wiggins claimed victory in his first ever open time trial by breaking the course record in the open category at the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 25-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon, with Angela Hannon-Flaherty the quickest in the female category.

Riding for Team Bottrill, Wiggins marked his debut with an unbeaten time of 48-32 to see off the challenge of Addform Vive Le Velo pair John Brearley and Stuart Henderson, who were second and third respectively in 52-59 and 54-02.

Wiggins also broke the previous course record of 49-08 held by Simon Wilson.

Quickest veteran on scratch Henderson narrowly edged Mark Wolstenholme (VTTA Yorkshire) into fourth by two seconds in 54-04.

At 19-years-old Wiggins has already taken silver in the junior time trial at the 2023 World Championships on the road, as well as success on the track as madison gold medallist at the 2023 World Junior Championships.

On his win, Wiggins said: “I am really happy to break the course record firstly.

“I’m happy with my ride while carrying some fatigue after a big block of training. I am really happy to execute a good performance on a tough course and a windy day.”

In the women’s event, Hannon-Flaherty set 1-04-10 as the Seacroft Wheelers rider took victory ahead of Sarah Harrison (Trek Sheffield) in 1-04-37, while a time of 1:04-56 helped Sarah Lewthwaite of Born To Bike to third spot.

Seacroft Wheeler’s David Meakin was quickest road bike in the open category in 1-01-21, and 17th overall, ahead of James Poulsom (Orien.cc) in second (1-03-03).

Lewthwaite topped the road bike standings in the female category and was third placed road bike overall.

Marjorie Davidson (Ravensthorpe CC) was second woman in 1-17-10 and Dalia Hawley (Albarosa CC) third (1-17-44).

This event, run on the V235 course, starts just south of Boroughbridge and heads south towards Walshford, with riders then following the A168 back past the start to Boroughbridge, before again heading back south to Walshford and north again on the A168 to finish just north of the start line.
