Jack Levick maintained his impressive form with a fifth victory of the season in the open category at the Yorkshire Cycling Federation Andy Wilson Memorial 50-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon, with Samantha Bissell earning the honours in the women’s event on what was her first-ever attempt at the distance.

Riding for Rose Race Team, Levick secured a win to add his others from VTTA East Midlands 10-mile time trial on his opening ride of the season on April 20, then success at East Bradford CC 15-mile time trial on May 26 and Selby CC 10-mile time trial on June 2, before winning at VTTA North Lancs and Lakes 50-mile time trial on June 15.

A time of 1:45-43 helped Levick to victory by more than eight minutes from nearest rival Shaun Lawson (Clifton Cycling Club York) in 1:53-50, with Phillip Tyas rounding out the top three for Barnsley Road Club in 1:56-24.

In the women’s event, City Road Club Hull’s Bissell was fastest in 2:08-47, ahead of Seacroft Wheelers rider Angela Hannon-Flaherty who set 2:08-57, while the final podium spot went to Beth Grogan (Selby Cycling Club) in 2:14-53.

On her win, Bissell said: “I was pleased with the win, especially with it being my first 50-mile time trial.

“It was very close between myself and Angela so I’m happy to take the win. The rain did settle a bit during the event so it was better than anticipated.”

First veteran on adjusted time was Mick Flaherty (Seacroft Wheelers) in 1:49-44 from Malcolm Steer (Zurbaran Racing) who set 1:54-36.

This annual event is held in honour of legendary Yorkshire rider Andy Wilson, formerly a member of Clifton CC, Hull Thursday RC and Yorkshire RC, who died in April 1926 aged 23, with the maiden Memorial 50 held in August 1926 and each winner receiving the trophy depicting Andy on his bike at the annual Yorkshire Cycling Federation Luncheon.

Riders endured an overcast afternoon with periods of drizzle, but roads remained dry while a light northerly wind, with the odd gust, resulted in a headwind up the long climb of the Red Wall.

This 50-mile event, run on the V151 course, is an out-and-back circuit sees riders complete a route from Walshford to Boroughbridge on the A168 three times before finishing just south of the start line.
