Trek-Sheffield rider Josie Smith proved quickest at the VTTA Yorkshire 10-mile time trial near Dishforth in North Yorkshire, while Marcel Schubert registered a second successive time trial win with victory in the open category.

Smith took the victory by just eight seconds in 22-04, with Molly Saville (Albarosa CC) the runner-up in 22-12, while a time of 22-47 helped Beth Grogan (Selby CC) to the final spot on the podium.

“I think the conditions were pretty perfect - about 16 degrees and not much wind,” said Smith. “It was raining when I got there, but luckily stopped in time for my warm up.

“It started raining towards the end but the roads stayed dry, it felt fast. I’d no idea on my fitness or pacing as I’ve not been racing at all since last year, only had the TT bike outside once after I entered this a few weeks ago and thought I’d see what I could do.

“So I am really surprised and pleased with my time - definitely helped by the conditions and the fast course!”

In the open category, having claimed victory at the VTTA (North) Closed Circuit Championship 10 on June 19, Zurbaran Racing rider Schubert followed that up with another success here.

He clocked 19-11 over the distance to fall 22 seconds short of the existing course record set by George Peden of 18-49.

In doing so, Schubert saw off the challenge of Keith Murray (Darlington Cycling Club) in 19-47, who narrowly claimed second place by just a second from Andy Thomas (Lindsey Roads Cycling Club) who set 19-48 to be edged into third.

“I still can’t quite believe how well it went,” said Schubert. “I had checked the MyWindsock report and knew I needed a negative split so went out cautiously on the first leg. But when I entered the return I was surprised how well I managed to hold on to the speed.

“There was hardly any wind after all and I think conditions were perfect and everything went to plan. However, the result exceeded my expectations, coming so close to beating the 19, when Spindata predicted a 19:59.

“Last time I rode this course in 2022 with a 19:26 result. I am extremely happy with my result, given that I am still behind my 2022 form.

“I want to thank the organising team! Everything was run really well and the post event catering was fantastic!”

The event was hotly contested with just 28 seconds separating second place from fifth, while ADDFORM Vive Le Velo enjoyed a strong showing with their riders Sam Straw, Andrew Miller and Neil Cleminshaw claiming fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Paul Dwyer (VTTA Yorkshire) was quickest road bike in 24-13, ahead of Nathan Smith (City Cycle Couriers) in 24-27.

This event used the V210 course which is an out-and-back circuit that starts just south of Rainton and heads south until turning at the Dishforth Interchange, turning northbound on the A168 past Topcliffe before turning back towards Dishforth.
