David Brearley and John Brearley opened their 2024 season with victory at the City Road Club Hull two-up 25-mile time trial in Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon.
Riding for ADDFORM Vive Le Velo, the Brearley brothers posted an unmatched time of 53-09 over the 25-mile course, with clubmates Andrew Miller and David Cleminshaw finishing almost a minute and a half behind in 54-34 for the runners-up spot, while James Bray and Nick Oehring (Hull Thursday/Barracuda Tri Club) finished third in 59-57.
As well as teaming up for this event, both Brearleys have accumulated fine records riding in individual events with the elder, John, winning the Yorkshire Road Club 25-mile time trial in September last year, while David was victorious at the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 50-mile time trial last July.
Afterward, David Brearley said: “It was a tough race with an easterly wind making it a cross-wind for the majority of the course but thankfully the hardest uphill section was mainly a tailwind.
“Racing with my brother we know each other’s strengths well and rode strongly where necessary. Knowing how well our team-mates are going in training, we needed to ride well for the full distance to get the win and we held it together.
“We will be back on the course in two weeks for the Hull Thursday RC event which I would encourage any riders thinking about it to enter and support these well run Yorkshire events. You don't need to be in the same club or have TT bikes to compete against the clock, and it’s a really good testing course.
“This was a great event ran by City RC Hull thanks to all the helpers and marshals for running and organising.”
This event, run on the V733 course, is a looped circuit and starts opposite Molescroft Grange Garm and heads west onto Driffield Road and then onto the A164 for Scarborough all the way up to Driffield, where riders bear west then south through Bainton all the way down to complete the loop and finish in Molescroft.
