John Archibald (HUUB WattShop) dug deep to set a provisional competition record in the National 100-Mile Championship in Cumbria, while Kate Allan (Team Bottrill) won the women’s title for the first time.

Despite wet and windy conditions in parts Archibald posted a new record time of three hours 12 minutes and 58 seconds – an average of over 31 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, Allan overcame some illness to set a new personal best of 3-40-12 to win the women’s event by over six minutes.

The L10010 course saw riders complete three out-and-back laps along the A66 between Keswick and Cockermouth. The North Lancashire Time Trials Association on behalf of the North DC stepped in to organiser the championship at short notice.

Archibald has won seven open events this season, including the National 50-mile Championship two weeks’ ago, and made it eight wins from nine events this time out.

Spindata predicted that he would win in 3-13-25 and it was that data which led Archibald to believe he could beat Marcin Bialoblocki’s competition record of 3-13-37 set in 2019.

The HUUB WattShop rider went even quicker than expected provisionally knocking 39 seconds off the previous benchmark.

After finishing runner-up in the National 50-mile Championship last month Adam Duggleby (ADDFORM Vive Le Velo) repeated that result taking silver in 3-20-48.

Completing the podium positions was Adam Wild (GS Metro) who completed the course in 3-22-03.

Team Bottrill won the team prize with Jake Sargent, Rob Francis and David Halliday all combining.

“It went very well, it ended up being a bit drizzly and wet, but better than I expected,” said Archibald.

“I didn’t realise until I saw the Spindata data that the record might be on. It really wasn’t a pleasant ride.

“I thought I had paced it conservatively at the start, but I hadn’t and definitely died towards the end.

“I tried to ride the 100 last year and punctured so didn’t finish and before that I hadn’t ridden so that’s the first 100 that I’ve done.”

Archibald has now won national titles over 10, 25,50 and 100 miles, but has ruled out the 12-hour.

“I can’t believe how painful that was today,” said Archibald. “I can’t imagine putting another eight or nine hours onto that, it’s mind-boggling. Today was a bit of an unknown, I didn’t really know what I could ride in terms of power, it’s a benchmark and the 50 I did was better than expected.”

After missing last years’ event through injury Allan, from Maidenhead, clinched the women’s National 100-mile Championship for the first time and set an open personal best in the process.

Allan completed the course in a time of 3-40-14 which was an average speed of 27.2 miles per hour.

Lizi Brooke (Hemel Hempstead CC) led the battle behind finishing second in 3-46-46, while Emily Martin (Team Bottrill) placed third (3-48-02).

Team Bottrill won the team award with Allan and Martin joined by fourth placed overall Alex Clay (3-48-23).

“I’ve got a cold, so I wasn’t certain that I was going to ride, it was touch and go but I decided to give it a go,” said Allan.

“It wasn’t the best conditions but I played it with a really consistent effort, because I was so grateful to be riding the pressure was off a little bit which I think can be an asset.

“It was wet and windy in places, I’m really pleased with my effort. I wasn’t genuinely expecting to win, it’s not my distance so to win by such a margin I’m really pleased.”
