In-form Debbie Moss recorded her tenth open time trial victory of the season with the women’s win at the Southport CC 10-mile time trial in Cheshire on Sunday, while Simon Wilson proved quickest in the open event.
Springfield Financial RT rider Moss – who holds the women’s record for this D33/10 course – was just over a minute off that mark in less than perfect conditions, but her time of 23-22 was still good enough to take the win by over three minutes from Hannah Fawcett (Liverpool Braveheart BC) with third going to Sharon Clifford (SheHair Racing Team).
In the open event Simon Wilson (HUUB Wattshop) clocked 18-58 to win by 18 seconds from Joshua Williams (Team Bottrill) with junior Albie Jones (North Cheshire Clarion) third in 20-15.
“It was really nice to take the win at Southport, a local club, lovely bunch of people,” said Moss. “The weather was back to its usual rubbish self, so it was cold and very windy. It wasn’t windy when I arrived, but when I went back to the van to get some gloves the wind had got up and was pretty windy.
“The longest section was into the headwind but the course covers two laps between two roundabouts, so there was a bit of a respite from the wind before more headwind and then the tailwind return.
“Thanks to Alan for organising the event and all the timekeepers, marshals and helpers, very much appreciated.”
Conditions were less than ideal with heavy drizzle at times and a strong cool breeze, but it didn’t stop many riders posting impressive times.
Fastest in the open category, Wilson said: “I committed to trying to deliver the best ride possible in the conditions, I took it a bit steady on the roundabouts in the wet but otherwise felt I got a good ride out.
“I set the course record of 18.22 the last time I rode a club event on a very hot and still evening so I was pretty happy with the ride in more challenging conditions. This was a great event promoted by Alan and the team at Southport CC - nice to see a number of young riders performing well.”
Youngest rider was 15-year-old Jamie Rabbett of Secret Training who finished in 21-51, while the oldest rider wand holder of many Scottish age group records was Alex Munro (Southport CC) in 33-13 at the age of 91!
Southport CC’s Mike Lloyd clocked 28-39 to finish as best road biker on age adjusted times, while the top team was Graham Weigh Racing-Deeside Olympic with Alan Broadbent, Barry Murphy and Ben Love combining for 1-05-13.
Veterans awards were also handed out on age adjusted times, and the over-40 winner was Simon Wilson with 18-50. Top over-50 was Mark Parsons (Team ASL Bolton) in 19-53 from an actual time of 21-02, while over-60s winner was Paul Grindley (Liverpool Century CC) whose adjusted time was 20-33.
Finally, top over 70 was Derek Unsworth (Bolton Clarion) in 22-12 on age adjusted time.
