Maria Sparks (Ashford Wheelers) posted a new club record on her way to winning the VTTA Kent 10, while Nicholas Fennell (Thanet RC) went quickest in the open event.

The event was also competed on veteran on standard which was won by Kevin Tye (Velo Refined Rule5).

Despite windy conditions Sparks, aged 36, posted a winning time of 23 minutes and 37 seconds which was also a personal best.

The Q10/30 saw competitors start outside Hillborough in Kent before heading out and back along the A299 to Monkton roundabout.

Sparks also won the Medway Velo Club 10 even last month posting 25-34, but went almost two minutes quicker on this occasion.

Veteran rider Fiona Howarth (VC Deal) was competing in her first open event for almost two years and finished runner-up on this occasion in 28-52.

Completing the women’s podium was Jennifer Fearn (Thanet RC) who stopped the clock in 34-00

“It was a great, friendly, well organised event,” said Sparks.

“It was the first time on that course for me and to come home with fastest female, a 10-mile personal best and an Ashford Wheelers women’s 10-mile club record, made for a great weekend!”

Fennell was the quickest rider on scratch with the 31-year-old stopped the clock in a winning time of 19-30.

The Thanet RC rider has been in fine form this season also winning the Medway Velo Club 10 and VTTA 30-mile events.

In the veteran’s event Tye’s finishing time of 20-35 was second quickest on the day and gave him the winning age standard of +7:38.

VeloRefined Rule 5 were also the best team on age standard with Tye joined by Mark Hill (21-40).

Second on age standard was Mark Vowells (San Fairy Ann CC) on a trike with a time of 24:51 giving him a +7:16.

Completing the veteran podium on standard was Gary Grayland (CC Bexley) with a 21-55 which meant he had a +5:52.

Fastest veteran on a road bike and setting the third quickest time overall was Paul Burrows, who also promoted the event, in a time of 20-50 which was a +5:41.

Behind Burrow in the road bike category was Mark Cain (Abellio – SFA Racing Team) who finished second in 22-30, ahead of Tim Kingston (GS Invicta) in third (22-37).
