Jacob Storey (TrainSharp) and Alex Clay (Team Bottrill) took advantage of good conditions to take the open and women’s victories respectively at the Kent CA 10.

Meanwhile, Mark Cain (Abellio - SFA Racing Team) was pushed close in the open road bike competition and Lydia Godfrey (Southborough & Dist Wh) was the only woman.

The Q10/50 saw riders start outside Hamstreet in Kent before turning onto the A2070 and then A259 out and back to the turn at Brookland.

Windy conditions the previous day had subsided for the Sunday event leaving a sunny but chilly morning with only a slight breeze.

Storey, aged 32, was competing in his first open event of the season and opened with a victory in 20 minutes and six seconds.

After winning 17 events last season and only being beaten into the runner-up position twice Nicholas Fennell (Thanet RC) provided tough competition. However, he had to settle for second on this occasion 10 seconds behind (20-16).

Para-cyclist Christopher Scott (Le Col Race Team) was third overall in 21-02, just 11 seconds quicker than quickest veteran Kevin Tye (21-13) and fellow VeloRefined Rule 5 rider Andrew Meilak (21-14).

“It was really good conditions today with not much wind,” said Storey.

“It wasn’t too hard on the way out and coming back was pretty good, I’m used to it blowing a gale.

“It was a nice morning, but still cold. I managed to put out good power, especially for this time of year. It felt a bit of a tough course and it would have been nice to dip under 20 minutes, but I’m happy with it.

“I’m looking towards the nationals this year after a couple of years of picking up some good results. I’m targeting the National 10 and 25 and hoping to do well.”

In the women’s event Alex Clay (Team Bottrill) opened her account for 2024 by taking a clear victory in 21-51.

Last season Clay, aged 28, from Wingham, was part of the winning National Team Time Trial Championship side and finished on two other national podiums.

The only other woman time trial competitor was Maria Sparks (Ashford Whs) who finished second in 25-02.

A close road bike competition saw the top three riders separated by 23 seconds. Leading the way was Mark Cain (Abellio - SFA Racing Team) who took victory on his first open outing of the season in 23-05.

Tim Kingston (GS Invicta - Eye Level Optical- Herbert Cycles) finished second just 11 seconds back (23-16), while Tom Moss (Southborough & Dist. Whs) finished third in 23-28.
