Orwell Velo’s Samuel McClean was fastest at the East District Road Bike Championships while Polly Mason (Ride Harder) was quickest woman in the event staged by Loose Cannon’s Conditioning on Sunday morning.

Run in tandem with the time trial bike event, the District Road Bike Championships was won by McClean in a time of 21-04, taking the win by 1-44 from Andy Proffitt (Arctic Aircon RT), while Chris Parker (Ipswich BC) was third, another 46 seconds back.

And in the women’s category Mason clocked 23-45 to take the title by over two minutes from Kerry Brennand (Newmarket Cycling and Tri Club), with Rita Rue (West Suffolk Wheelers) third.

In the time trial event Epic Orange Race Team rider Dan Blackburn posted an unbeaten 20-15 ahead of Lee Shipp (Diss & District CC), who set 20-48 to finish second, while Nick Esser (Beccles Tri Club) was third.

“Heavy rain overnight left a slightly damp course but cleared the humid conditions,” said Blackburn.

“There was a headwind on the slightly longer outward leg with a pretty helpful tailwind on the return to the finish.”

This was Blackburn’s final time trial of the season, although he will continue training ahead of the Gravel World Championships in October.

In the women’s time trial bike category Denise Hurren (Sale Bay Cycle Sport) clocked 23-49 which left Carla Shipp (Diss & Dist CC) second.

“My plan was to go harder into the head wind on the outward leg and keep as aero as possible which turned out to be a very hard pursuit,” said women’s road bike title winner Mason.

“It felt like a very slow slog into the last drag before the turn and then I used whatever power I had left to ride the tailwind to the finish completely cooked. I had no time or power PB but I was happy to have retained the trophy. It was another great event organised by Loose Cannon conditioning!”

Nick Esser of Beccles Tri Club was the fastest over 50s veteran on the course, clocking 21-23 to finish fourth overall, while Simon Daw was the first 60 plus veteran to cross the line in 21-58, a time which saw him finish one place behind Esser.

Over 70s veteran Steven Rue (West Suffolk Wheelers) crossed the line using a road bike in 27-45 to finish 20th overall.

This 10-mile event, run on the B10/36R, begins on Ash Road where it heads south on the A12. Upon reaching the northern boundary of Woodbridge, it u-turns before retracing its steps to finish just south of its start location.
