Road bike competitor Kerry Brennand (Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club) capped a successful season by taking the women’s victory at the CC Breckland 30, while Dan Blackburn (Epic Orange Race Team) was fastest in the open category.
Brennand, aged 44, took her ninth open women’s road bike victory of the season and female overall honours by stopping the clock in a winning time of one hour, 22 minutes and 17 seconds.
The CC Breckland 30-mile event saw competitors battle for honours along two 15-mile out and back laps on a single carriageway course in Suffolk.
Riders were greeted by warm conditions of around 15 degrees but a deceptive crosswind in both directions hindered times somewhat.
Despite competing on a road bike this season Brennand has also been battling for overall women’s honours.
The Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club rider stopped the clock over three minutes faster than time trial bike competitor Sharn Crane (Beccles Tri Club), who was second woman overall (1-25-57).
Fellow Beccles Tri Club rider Suzy Esser finished third woman overall in 1-30-59.
“It was a course I hadn’t done before but it was slightly undulating,” said Brennand.
“I’m really pleased to come away with the win and course record as well. I was on a road bike competing against woman on time trial bikes so I was just aiming for the win.
“I’ve had quite a good season, a few wins and I’ve felt quite strong. I’m now going to focus on duathlons, I did a five-mile run after today’s event.”
Blackburn came into the event as course record holder and took his second open victory of the season on this occasion in a new benchmark time of 1-03-42.
The 47-year-old had to settle for runner-up in the Diss & District CC 25 earlier this month but went one better this time out.
Fellow veteran rider Chris Holmes (VC Norwich) finished second in (1-06-57), while Mark Arnold (API/Anglia Sport) completed the open podium positions in 1-07-58.
David Gill (Diss & District CC) finished third in the road bike category at the National 12-hour Championship last weekend and took victory on this occasion.
The 61-year-old posted a winning time of 1-21-17 which was exactly one minute quicker than female competitor Brennand, while Edward Nottingham (Diss & District CC) was third road bike overall (1-26-50).
