Peter Hurry emerged triumphant in the open category at the Orwell Velo 15 on Saturday to claim the Renny Stirling Memorial Trophy, with Becky Ridge finishing as fastest female in Suffolk.

Riding for Plomesgate CC, Hurry set an unbeaten time of 38-22 to take victory with Julian Bosley (Stowmarket & District C) the runner-up in 38-55 and a time of 39.30 helping Becky Ridge to finish first female and third overall for Loose Cannon’s Conditioning.

This win marks Hurry’s first ever time trial success in 22 events since debuting with a 24th place at the Wolsey RC 25-mile time trial in April 2018, with his best result also coming at Wolsey RC, with a second place in the 10-mile time trial in July 2022, following it up with a runners-up finish at the Orwell Velo 16.5-mile time trial in March 2023.

Introduced for the first time this year, the inaugural road bike category was narrowly won by Velouse Flyers rider David Webster, finishing sixth overall in 42-07 and matching the time he set last year on a time trial bike, while triumphing by a single second over Andy Kennedy (Ipswich BC) who clocked 42-08 with his clubmate Jason Corner finishing the event in third in a time of 42-53.

Riders faced challenging conditions out on the 15-mile course, with a stiff wind in affecting all the competitors but fortunately the weather stayed dry throughout despite some ominous looking clouds.
