Cambridge University CC rider Will Lowden broke the course record despite cold and greasy conditions at the CC Sudbury event over 22 miles, while host club riders Simon Potter and Angela Lesslie were the quickest men’s and women’s road bikes.

The Cycle Club Sudbury ‘Mad March’ hilly time trial consisted of 22 miles around an undulating circuit from Lavenham, Newton Green, Hadleigh, Semer, Monks Eleigh and finishing back in Lavenham.

Competitors set off in greasy conditions and a temperature of just two degrees celsius. Riders had to stay vigilant as there was standing water at Kersey Mill, requiring additional marshals.

Despite the conditions Lowden set a new course record with a time of 45 mins and 19 secs, averaging 29.1 miles per hour and maxing out at 50.2mph.

Lowden, aged 20, from Bury St. Edmunds, won four open time trials last season – including the National Circuit Championship.

Showing his form over the undulating terrain the Cambridge University CC rider finished exactly seven minutes clear of his nearest opponent.

Cycle Club Sudbury had a strong team for their home event with team-mates Simon Daw (52-19) and Alexander Purcell (52-21) battling for second with just two seconds separating them.

The pair helped Cycle Club Sudbury to the team prize along with fourth placed overall Charlie Heeks (53-29).

Quickest junior Charlie Upton won more honours for CC Sudbury with his time of 58-28 good enough for sixth time trial bike and ahead of his dad, Daniel Upton.

In a great day for the host club Simon Potter was a clear winner in the road bike category stopping the clock in 54-50.

Potter was competing in his first open road bike event after finishing 12th in the time trial category at the same event last season.

The battle for runner-up in the road bike category saw Joseph Shaw (Ipswich BC) finish in 57-48 which was just 29 seconds quicker than Jason Corner (Iceni Velo).

Both women competitors were riding road bikes with Lesslie recording a time of 1-07-42 which beat CC Sudbury team-mate Caroline Wyke into second (1-24-40).
