Felix Whetter began his time trial season by finishing as fastest male at the Penzance Wheelers 10-mile time trial on Saturday morning, with Martina Geraghty the quickest woman in Cornwall.

Riding his first event of the campaign, Mid Devon CC rider Whetter showed impressive form in setting an unmatched 22-15 to take victory ahead of Rob Scott (City Cycle Couriers CC) who was 31 seconds back in second.

Whetter enjoyed a strong end to the 2022 hill climb season, with victories at the City Cycle Couriers hill climb and two successive Saint Piran hill climb wins and has continued that success into the time trial arena.

There was a good battle for third, with Oliver Baylin edging out Giant Helston team-mate James Grogan by a single second, finishing in 22-54 compared to Grogan’s 22-55.

In the women’s event, Penzance Wheelers’ Geraghty clocked 25-55 for the top prize, comfortably ahead of Tri Logic Cornwall rider Sophie Butcher in the runners-up spot in 26-52, while Rose Willis, riding for St Austell Wheelers CC, finished in 28-03 for third – seeing off fourth-placed Lindsay Philp (Wadebridge Coasters) by just three seconds.

This event, run on the S6/10 course, starts on the B3275 at the entrance to Trecurno, and proceeds north east for half a mile where riders turn left and continue on the B3275 through Ladock and Newmills to turn at Brighton roundabout.

From there they retrace the outward route through Newmills and Ladock to finish just west of Probus.
