Adam Kenway (Team Brother UK) and Alice Larkin (Glossop Kinder Velo Cycling Club) took the men’s and women’s victories respectively in a closely fought Drighlington BC hill climb event on Scotchman Lane.

Former national champion Kenway covered the 1.35-kilometre course in a winning time of two minutes and 53 seconds – just two seconds clear of his nearest opponent.

Starting at the junction of Howley Mill Lane the climb has an average gradient of 6.5% and finishes just as competitors enter Morley in West Yorkshire.

Kenway took his first open hill climb win of the season last weekend in the Bolsover and District CC event on Carr Lane and continued his winning run on this occasion.

The 36-year-old finished just two seconds ahead of course record holder Andy Cunningham (Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli) who stopped the clock in 2-55.

However, Cunningham’s record time of 2-29 set last year remains for another year at least.

Completing the podium positions was Jake Wade (Lindsey Roads Cycling Club) who stopped the clock in 3-19.

The quickest veteran was Andrew Askwith (Vive Le Velo) in 3-43, while Ben Crowther (Harrogate Nova CC) was the fastest junior recording a time of 3-57.

The women’s event saw Larkin post a time of 4-12.2 which was just four tenths of a second quicker than Kat Handy (Valley Striders Cycling Club).

Veteran rider Larkin finished third in the Cheshire Maverick Cycle Club event in September and went two positions better on this occasion.

Riding her first open hill climb of the season Handy was narrowly beaten into second, while Jessica Roberts (Drighlington BC) finished third in 4-55.
