Jen McMahon (Jadan Vive le Velo) and John Routledge (GTR-Return to Life) proved fastest at the Blaydon CC evening 12-mile time trial in Northumberland, while Marcus Cram (Muckle CC) and Joshua Hodgson (GS Metro) tied for the road bike prize.
McMahon’s time of 31-46 gave her the women’s prize by around two and a half minutes from Justine Norman (Velo Culture), while road biker Angela McGurk (Blaydon CC) was third fastest woman and best on a road bike.
Meanwhile Routledge clocked 26-36 to win overall by 21 seconds from Nick Badcock (Allen Valley Velo) while Phil Hall (Velo Culture) was third, just one second further back.
“I enjoy the M12,” said Routledge. “It’s a nice sporting course, rolling and twisty up towards the quarry and then flatter, faster roads back to the finish.
“I knew I had to go out hard, the first half of the course is all slightly uphill. The predicted headwind back never really came to much thankfully and sounds like I had a bit of luck missing some sheep on the road. Chuffed to get the win for GTR.”
And McMahon said after the event: “I’m very happy to win my first time trial of the season. Being very familiar with the course, I felt confident going into the race knowing the roads well. And the weather was perfect with very little wind.
“I really thought I had gone out too hard at the start but gained a lot of recovery at the top of the quarry to then push hard again from Matfen through to the finish.”
Originally just a road bike event, it was opened up to time trial bikes too with the introduction of road bike categories in all events.
And while weather was perfect for most riders a few did get stopped by a while with a farmer moving some sheep and blocking the road.
Cram and Hodgson tied on 28:22 to win the road bike category, while McGurk won the same category for the females (34:30).
Harris Hall of Velo Culture was the fastest junior rider (27:57) for fifth overall. Keeping it in the family, his father Phil Hall and mother Justine Norman picked up the prizes for fastest male and female veteran on age adjusted time.
And a special mention goes to 12-year-old Derwentside CC rider Matthew Mather who was completing his first time trial on open roads – he rode 32:47 whilst his father Chris Mather completed the course in 30:19.
