Christopher Gibbard (Bynea Cycling Club) and Emma Wyatt (Hereford & Dist Whs CC) came away with the Welsh Championship titles by winning the men’s and women’s events at the Pontypool RCC 10.

Veteran rider Gibbard was on top form and despite battling against windy conditions posted a winning time of 19 minutes and seven seconds.

Scratch rider Gibbard won the Welsh CA Championship 100 last month and added another title to his collection over the much shorter 10-mile distance.

The R10/17 saw riders start outside Llangattock-Nigh-Usk before heading out and back along the A40 to the roundabout at Raglan.

Fellow veteran Conrad Moss (Nopinz) came into the event after winning all four of his open events this season but was pushed into second on this occasion stopping the clock in 19-18.

Anthony Jones (VMCC powered by Y Beic) was the only other rider to break the 20-minute barrier to take third.

Spindata had predicted a victory for Moss in 19-18, but Gibbard overturned that deficit in reality.

“I was really pleased to win as it was a really big field,” said Gibbard. “It’s nice to do a big event with lots of local riders there.

“It was really windy, I was flying on the way out thinking that it was going to be carnage on the way back with a strong.

“I managed to keep enough in the tank for the last mile-and-a-half, which is important on that course as there’s a little rise and you need to have enough left to get back to speed after you go over it or you lose lots of time.

“I was unsure how it was going to go as I’ve been riding a lot of the longer distances and it normally takes me 10 miles to get warmed up these days. It was really good to take home the win and another Welsh Championship.

“I won it in 2021 so this is the second 10 Welsh Championship that I’ve won. It’s nice to win the 100 and the 10 in the same season as they’re quite different events.

“A lot of people ride 10s and a lot of people who ride other disciplines ride the 10, while the 100 is a bit more niche. It’s good to win and show myself that I’ve still got it.”

Quickest juvenile rider was Alex Coles (Evolution Racing Academy) who posted 21-56, finishing ahead of team-mate William Coles (22-51).

In the women’s event Wyatt posted a winning time of 23-22 which was 59 seconds quicker than her nearest competitor.

Wyatt, aged 46, from Hereford, has been on stellar form having also won the Virtual Cycling Club 25 and added another win to her collection.

Lisa Davies (VMCC powered by Y Beic) led the battle behind stopped the clock in 24-22 for second while Bethan Ouseley (Pembrokeshire Velo) finished third (24-39).

The road bike event was the closest with both Luke Allen (Team Echelon) and David Fellows (Solihull CC) sharing the win after posting times of 20-43.

Owen Burgess (UF Rowe & King) was a close third finishing just 14 seconds behind in 20-57.

Joanna Cliffe (Pontypool Road Cycling Club) was the quickest road bike woman finishing in 25.37 ahead of Charlotte Mead (Monmouthshire Wheelers) in second (27-44) while Andrea Parish (VeloSistas TT Team) finished third (28-11).
