Christopher Gibbard (Bynea CC) came out on top of a three-way battle for victory in the Welsh CA 100-Mile Championship, while Roxy Woodfield (Ludlow Brewery Race Team) was a convincing winner in the women’s event.
Veteran rider Gibbard took his sixth open time trial victory of the season in a winning time of three hours, 34 minutes and 44 seconds.
In a close finish the top three riders were separated by under two minutes with Gibbard coming out on top.
The R100/9 saw competitors complete three-and-a-half laps starting at Reglan before heading out to Abergavenny on the A40 before turning and then heading down to Monmouth and then returning back to Raglan.
After three full laps competitors then headed past Raglan to the finish after the turn at Abergavenny.
Competitors started in near perfect conditions as the sun rose in Monmouthshire but a rising westerly wind resulted in clouds coming over and increasingly tough conditions.
Gibbard also won the West Wales Cyclists’ League 100 last month on the same course recording a time of 3-25-58 in better conditions.
This time out Gibbard was locked in battle with scratch rider Anthony Jones (VMCC powered by Y Beic) and Tom Thornely (Fulfil the Potential RT).
Jones, who won the bike-pace 50 in May, settled for second this time out in 3-36-17 which was 26 seconds quicker than Thornely. Quickest veteran on age adjusted time was won by Jones.
Spindata had predicted a victory for Gibbard in 3-31-01 but he was three minutes slower in tough conditions.
Gibbard also led Bynea Cycling Club to the team award alongside Kyle Davies (4-01-05) and Dan Jenkins (4-09-48).
An impressive debut over 100 miles saw Owen Burgess (UF Rowe & King) finish seventh in 3-46-41 just 12 minutes behind the winner.
“It wasn’t as warm today and the wind really picked up in the second half,” said Gibbard.
“I was plugging away and then I saw Anthony Jones, who is my big rival locally. We passed each other in roughly the same place in each of the three laps.
“After the first lap I could see that I was beating him, but after the second lap he was taking time out of me and catching me up.
“I was hoping in the third lap that I could take it a bit easier, but when I could see it was neck and neck I knew I had to make myself suffer a bit and dig it out.
“Tom (Thornely) got really close at one point and I could see that he wasn’t far behind. I still had a decent amount left in the legs for the last lap so I just gave it some beans.”
In the women’s event Woodfield recorded a winning time of four hours, 26 minutes and eight seconds – over nine minutes clear of her nearest challenger.
Woodfield also won the West Wales Cyclists’ League 100 last month and despite going slower in the windy conditions added another win to her collection.
Lisa Davies (VMCC powered by Y Beic) finished second in 4-35-12 ahead of Hollie Labunsky (Port Talbot Whs CC) in third (4-41-02).
Taking part in his first open time trial veteran rider Aled Jones (Cardiff Ajax CC) was a clear winner in the road bike event stopping the clock in 4-09-35.
Luke Jones (Vive Le Velo) was second in the road bike category in 4-40-59 ahead of Simon Howarth (Pontypool Road Cycling Club) in third (4-46-01).
