Stuart Hourigan (VeloRefined Rule 5) took his first open victory in over 10 years at the Sotonia CC 10, while Claire Emons (a3crg) clearly won the women’s event.
Veteran Hourigan last took victory in the Epsom CC two-up over 25 miles in September 2013 and returned to the top spot on this occasion.
The 47-year-old recorded a time of 19 minutes and 18 seconds which was just eight seconds slower than the personal best he set earlier this season.
The P612 saw riders start outside Andover and compete out and back along the A303 to the turn at Bullington Cross.
Scratch rider Hourigan finished runner-up in both the Kent CA 25 and Epsom CC 10 events earlier this season.
However, the veteran was not to be denied this time out finishing 37 seconds quicker than both Matt Fisher (HUUB WattShop) and Steven Pink (Poole Wheelers Cycling Club who shared the runners-up spot after both stopping the clock in 19-55.
Spindata had predicted that Fisher would take victory in 19-26 but in reality his time was 29 seconds slower, while Hourigan improved on his forecasted 19-33.
“What a great way to sign off for the year,” said Hourigan. “It’s been a while since I’ve won. I’ve had a virus in the last few weeks but knew the form was there but didn’t have the top end. I got it right today.
“It was my first time on the course so I was learning it, it was a nice and quick course. I didn’t quite get my personal best, but that was down to course knowledge.
“We’ve done well as a team this season.”
In the women’s event veteran rider Emons took her seventh open victory of the season stopping the clock in 22 minutes and 15 seconds.
Emons, aged 55, was also quickest in her age group at the National Road Bike Championship last weekend and added another win to her collection.
Fellow ...a3crg rider Sarah Matthews finished second in 23-32 ahead of Alexa Forbes (London Dynamo) in third (24-48).
“It was brilliant,” said Emons. “I hadn’t ridden the course before so had to drive it in the dark before the event.
“It was a bit colder than I prefer for the early morning event. There were a few long drags and because I hadn’t ridden the course before I didn’t know how hard to push.
“Next time I think I could do a better time, but I’m happy.”
Malcolm Cox (Velo Club St Raphael) took his second road bike category win of the season stopping the clock in 21-54.
The veteran also won the Hounslow & District Wheelers event over 100 miles in May and showed his form over the shorter distance.
Greg Sanger, riding for host club Sotonia CC, finished second in 25-40 and Simon Hall (Crabwood Cycling Club) was third (26-41).
