Newbury Velo pairing Rachael Elliott and Ian Greenstreet successfully defended their title in Sotonia CC’s Tandem Tart 10 in Hampshire on Sunday, one of 28 tandems in action on a day of impressive fundraising efforts.
Sunny conditions greeted the 141 participants with every rider, official and volunteers receiving a prize at the event, which was held to raise funds for the ME Association’s Ramsay Research Fund.
Elliott and Greenstreet were almost two minutes faster than second-placed tandem, the Newbury Velo duo clocking 21-20, while Jon Saunders (Charlotteville CC) and Elizabeth Jordan (Storey Racing) being runners-up.
In other categories Alex Rowling finished as fastest male on a time trial bike, with Izzy Sharp the fastest female.
The event, held in the New Forest, also saw Matthew Buckley and Andrew Rivett win the two-up time trial, Adam Kiernan triumph in the men’s road bike category, Beverley Hards leading the field in the female road bike category, while Nigel Pratt was top of the Wessex VTTA listing.
Rowling, riding for Poole Wheelers Cycling Club, finished in 21-47 to take a comfortable victory ahead of Velo Club St Raphael’s Nigel Pratt in 22-43 while Rowling’s clubmate Mark Valentine sealed the final podium spot in 22-49.
Drag2zero rider Sharp clocked an impressive 21-57 to not only take the top female prize but also finish second overall, while a time of 24-10 helped Holly Ramsey (Tofauti Everyone Active) to second place with third taken by Districts of Hamwic Cyclesport member Emma O’Toole.
This 10-mile event, run on the P164 R2 course, starts just east of Lyndhurst and heads south east towards Beaulieu on the B3056 before turning left onto North Lane and turning north east crossing Hartford Bridge and continuing north, turning left at Ipley Cross to pass Ferny Croft and finish on yew Tree Heath Road.
