Anthony Jones

Anthony Jones finished as fastest male at the Bike Pace 50-mile time trial in Monmouthshire on Saturday afternoon, while Emma Bexson was quickest female over the course.

Riding for VMCC powered by Y Beic, Jones clocked 1:43-26 to take a second win from four open time trials this season, with Saint Piran’s Will Bjergfelt runner-up in 1:45-52 and a time of 1:46-42 enough for Tony Chapman (Frome and District Wheelers) to seal third place and the final podium spot.

Despite a light north-easterly breeze frustrating some attempts at personal bests, both Bjergfelt and Chapman were able to lower their times in the sometimes challenging conditions, with riders facing a clear sky and increasingly warm temperatures.

In the road bike event Robbie Disney (Ludlow CC) went fastest with 1:58-36, while the quickest team of two was Velo Myrddyn CC thanks to Jones and Ben Phillips’ combined efforts of 3:38-15 - more than 15 minutes clear of the second-placed club team.

The women’s event saw Bexson (Stratford Cycling Club) finish in 2:09-06, well ahead of second-placed Hollie Labunsky, riding for Port Talbot Wheelers CC, who completed the course in 2:14-26, while Bristol South Cycling Club’s Joanna Knight was third in 2:29-56.

This 50-mile event, run on the R50/1B course, starts on the A40 just south of Abergavenny and heads along the A40 curving south-eastwards towards Monmouth, then following to Raglan roundabout and turning to follow the route back westbound back past the start, then completing another out-and-back to finish near the start line.

Next event for Anthony Jones is expected to be the a3crg 50 on June 4, while he has also entered the Welsh National 100-Mile Championships in July where he will be defending the title he won 12 months earlier.

In-form Bexson is next due to be in action at the Anfield BC 100 on May 29, and she has also entered the West Wales Cyclists’ League 100 on June 18.
