Marc Cox claimed a dominant victory in the men’s event at the Welsh 25-mile Championship in Monmouthshire on Sunday morning, with Anna Morris setting a new course record in claiming the women’s title.

Having finished runner-up in 2022, 36-year-old Cox finally earned the title with the Guernsey Velo Club rider finishing clear of the field by more than one minute in 47-02, ahead of second-placed Ben Jones (Port Talbot Wheelers) who registered 48-03, while a time of 48-08 ensured reigning champion Christopher Gibbard sealed third spot.

Cox, who represented Guernsey at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, was favourite to win according to national rankings system Spindata but faced stiff competition from the reigning champion Gibbard, who set a new personal best of 46-38 in taking last year’s title but couldn’t reproduce the same form to retain his crown, and second-placed Ben Jones – also the runner-up at the 50-mile Welsh Championship in September 2022.

In the women’s title race Morris (WardPerformanceUK.com) finished in a new course record 50-20 to take the title, with a3crg rider Claire Emons back in second with a time of 58-06, and third place going to Hereford & District Wheelers rider Emma Wyatt in 58-06.

On her victory, Morris said: “I had a season away from road time trials last year to focus on track events, so I’m really pleased with the ride and the new course record. I rode the course in August 2021 so that gave me more of an idea going into today, and that definitely helped me.”

Riders faced challenging conditions, with the weather a drizzly for much of the event but fairly still, before the heavens opened over the final few miles.

This event, run on the R25/7 course, starts on Monmouth Road and proceeds towards Usk where riders head eastbound and continue until encircling the roundabout then going northbound past Llandenny on the A449, passing Raglan and veering northeast until reaching Monmouth, encircling and retracing the route back to finish just south of the start.
